US Midterms 2026: Trump’s Republicans Defeated, Trump Blames Iran

Last updated: 4 November 2026

President Donald Trump’s Republican Party has suffered a heavy defeat in the US midterm elections 2026. US media projected on Wednesday 4 November that the Democrats will take control of both the House of Representatives and the Senate, two years into Trump’s second term.

Speaking to Fox News, Trump said part of the reason for the Republican losses “was Iran”, referring to the US war with Iran. He also warned that Democrats would send him laws he called “insane” and said he would veto them.

US midterm election 2026 results so far

  • House of Representatives: US media projected that Democrats will regain control.
  • Senate: ABC News projected a Democratic majority. Democrats flipped seats in states Trump won easily in 2024.
  • Key Senate races: in Texas, James Talarico beat Ken Paxton; in Ohio, Sherrod Brown unseated Jon Husted; in Kansas, Adam Hamilton unseated Roger Marshall; Democrats also flipped North Carolina.
  • Seats held: Democrats kept their seats in Georgia and New Hampshire.

Final seat totals were still being counted at the time of writing.

Why Trump blames Iran for the midterm loss

Reuters reported that Trump acknowledged the war in Iran played a role in the Republican losses. Voters also named the cost of living and inflation as main frustrations. Congress had already challenged Trump’s Iran war policy before the vote.

Trump also posted on Truth Social that he “wasn’t on the Ballot” and that if he had been, Republicans would have won. He told The New York Times he was “absolutely willing to accept those results.” He shared a picture of his red cap with the single word “VETO”.

What a Democratic Congress means

  • Laws: Democrats can now pass bills in both chambers, but Trump can veto them. Overriding a veto needs a two-thirds majority in both the House and Senate.
  • Iran policy: a Democratic Congress is expected to push harder to limit the president’s war powers on Iran.
  • Investigations: control of committees lets Democrats call officials and open inquiries.

Is there any change for Saudi Arabia?

No change for residents of Saudi Arabia has been announced. Travel, visas and daily life in the Kingdom continue as normal.
