Health Insurance Check in Saudi Arabia 2026: by Iqama, Border Number or Passport (CHI and IA)

You can do a health insurance check in Saudi Arabia online for free in under a minute. With your iqama or national ID, use the Insurance Authority (IA) Check Health Insurance Service or the Council of Health Insurance (CHI, formerly CCHI) Insurance Information Inquiry. With a border number, passport or visit visa, use the CHI visitor inquiry or the IA visit visa inquiry. Each check shows whether you are insured, which company insures you and until when.

Many expats in Saudi Arabia only find out their insurance has lapsed at a hospital reception or when an iqama renewal gets stuck. This guide shows the official pages with our own screenshots, explains what each result means, and what to do if you are not insured, your family is missing or Absher does not show your policy.

  2. Enter the Identity Number: your 10-digit iqama number (starts with 2) or Saudi national ID (starts with 1), the one used when the policy was issued.
  3. Tick the consent box and press Search. There is no code to type.

The Insurance Authority has supervised insurance companies since March 2024, which is why it now runs its own official check. It is free and instant, and the service has over 1,100 user ratings.

CCHI Insurance Check: The CHI Insurance Information Inquiry

  1. Open the CHI Insurance Information Inquiry.
  2. Enter your Identity Number. CHI’s service page says you can use the national ID, iqama, passport, border or visa number that was used when the policy was issued.
  3. Type the image code, tick the consent box and press OK.
  4. Check the insurer, the validity and your policy details.

CHI is the same body many people still call CCHI: the Council of Cooperative Health Insurance took the new name Council of Health Insurance in 2021. It still sets who must be insured, fines employers and handles complaints about hospitals and employers.

Check Health Insurance With a Border Number or Passport

  • Residents with a border number (new arrivals before the iqama is issued): use the CHI resident inquiry above.
  • Visitors, tourists and pilgrims: use the CHI visitor, tourist and pilgrim inquiry with a passport, visa or border number. For Hajj and Umrah pilgrims, CHI asks you to use the passport number.
  • Hajj and Umrah: the IA Hajj and Umrah insurance inquiry accepts a passport, visa or border number.

Visit Visa Insurance Check

Every visit visa needs medical insurance, and so does every extension. Use the IA Visit Visa Travel Insurance Inquiry (launched in August 2026) with the passport number used for the visa, or the CHI visitor inquiry. Visit visa insurance covers emergencies only, up to SAR 100,000, and your employer is not obliged to insure family members on a visit visa. Before extending a visit visa on Absher, check the insurance covers the new period. See our guides to visit visa medical insurance and extending a visit visa.

Check Insurance on Absher, Tawakkalna or the Daman App

  • Absher: the public query for health insurance validity (residents only) shows whether your insurance is linked to your iqama record at Jawazat. It does not show full policy details.
  • Tawakkalna: the insurance card shows the insurer, membership number, policy expiry date and your name.
  • Daman (CHI app): shows your insurance and your family members’ insurance, the approved hospital network and benefits, and lets you file complaints.
  • Bupa, Tawuniya and other insurers: your membership shows inside the insurer’s own app after you log in. For a public check with only your iqama number, use the IA or CHI check, which covers every insurer.

What the Result Means and What to Do

ResultWhat to do
Insured, validNothing. Your iqama or national ID is enough at hospitals; you do not need the insurer card
Expired or no insurance found (employee)Ask HR first. Employers must insure you from the first working day, including probation. If they do not, file a confidential complaint with CHI
Insured, but Absher shows nothingAsk HR or the insurer, then use CHI’s linkage request (about 10 working days)
Family member missingCheck each person with their own iqama number. Newborns must be reported to the employer within 30 days of birth
Two policies or the wrong insurerEach person can have only one policy. If both parents work, children normally go under the father’s policy

Who Must Be Insured: Employer Rules and Fines

  • Employees: private-sector employers must insure all Saudi and non-Saudi employees, and pay the full premium. Deducting it from salary is not allowed.
  • Family members: the employer must also insure the spouse (including a second wife), sons up to 25, unmarried non-working daughters and fostered orphans.
  • Fines (Article 14 of the Cooperative Health Insurance Law): an employer who fails to insure must pay all unpaid premiums plus a fine of up to one year’s premium per person, and can be barred from recruiting. In the third quarter of 2025 CHI issued 140 penalty decisions worth SAR 828,321.
  • Iqama link: the law says a residence permit cannot be issued or renewed without insurance covering the residence period, so expired insurance can block an iqama renewal. See how to check your iqama expiry date.
  • Domestic workers: insurance is mandatory for employers with more than 4 domestic workers since 1 July 2024.
  • Cover limit: the unified policy covers up to SAR 1 million per person for large companies.

How to Complain About Health Insurance

ProblemWhere to complainContact
Insurance company (claims, approvals, refunds)IA Care800 124 0551
Employer did not insure you or your familyCHI complaint against employer (confidential, Nafath)CHI 920001177
Hospital or clinicCHI complaint against a service providerCHI 920001177
Insurance not linked to your iqama recordCHI linkage requestAbout 10 working days

The quickest fix for most problems is still HR: a missing family member or a policy that is not linked usually takes a single request from the employer to the insurer. Complain to CHI or IA when that does not work.

Frequently Asked Questions

How can I check my health insurance in Saudi Arabia with my iqama number?

Open the Insurance Authority’s Check Health Insurance Service (ia.gov.sa/en/CheckHealthInsurance), enter your 10-digit iqama number, tick the consent box and press Search. You can also use the Council of Health Insurance (CHI) Insurance Information Inquiry, which asks for your identity number and an image code. Both are free and show whether you are insured, the insurer and the validity.

How do I check CCHI insurance with a border number?

Use the Council of Health Insurance (CHI) inquiry pages: the resident inquiry accepts passport, border or visa numbers, and the visitor, tourist and pilgrim inquiry asks for a passport, visa or border number. The Insurance Authority’s resident check only accepts a 10-digit iqama or national ID.

How do I check visit visa insurance in Saudi Arabia?

Use the Insurance Authority’s Visit Visa Travel Insurance Inquiry with the passport number used for the visa, or the CHI visitor, tourist and pilgrim inquiry with a passport, visa or border number. Visit visa insurance covers emergencies only, up to SAR 100,000.

Is CCHI the same as CHI?

Yes. The Council of Cooperative Health Insurance (CCHI) took the new name Council of Health Insurance (CHI) in 2021. Since March 2024 the Insurance Authority (IA) supervises insurance companies and also runs an official insurance check.

What can I do if my employer has not insured me?

Private employers must insure all employees and their covered family members from the first working day, including probation, and cannot deduct the cost from salary. You can file a confidential complaint against your employer with the Council of Health Insurance through its website with Nafath.

Why does my insurance not show in Absher?

Absher only shows whether insurance is linked to your iqama record at Jawazat. If you are insured but it does not show, ask HR or your insurer, then use CHI’s linkage request service, which takes about 10 working days.

How can I check Bupa or Tawuniya insurance by iqama number?

Bupa and Tawuniya show your membership inside their own apps after you log in. For a quick public check with only your iqama number, use the Insurance Authority or CHI check, which covers every insurer.
