How Postal Codes Work in Saudi Arabia (2026 Update)

Saudi Arabia uses a 5-digit postal code system managed by Saudi Post (SPL), introduced in 2005 as part of the National Address initiative. Every digit identifies a specific geographic level:

What Actually Changed in January 2026

There is a lot of confusion about this, including on sites that should know better, so here is the precise position.

What changed. The Transport General Authority mandated that all parcel and courier shipments to, from, and within Saudi Arabia must carry a valid National Address or Short Address. This took effect on 1 January 2026. Courier companies including DHL, FedEx, Aramex and SMSA reject shipments that do not comply, and non-compliance can attract fines.

What did not change. Saudi Post did not introduce a new postal code format. The 9-digit structure, meaning your 5-digit postal code plus a 4-digit additional number, has been part of the National Address system for years. It is not new and it was not made mandatory in January 2026.

What the mandate actually requires. The Short Address, an eight-character code made of four letters and four numbers, for example RNMA7272. This is what couriers need. It identifies your exact building.

Where the 5-digit code is still fine. Domestic mail and PO Box correspondence still work on the 5-digit postal code alone. Nothing about that changed.

The Three Codes You Actually Have

Most expats have three separate identifiers and do not realise they are different things.

All three appear on the green National Address plate on your building, and all three are retrievable through Absher, Tawakkalna or the SPL portal.

A Note on Older Codes

You will still see Riyadh given as 11461, Jeddah as 21442, and Khobar as 31952 on older forms and international shipping guides. Those are the traditional PO Box-era postal codes and they still exist. The codes in the tables below are the National Address district codes, which are what you need for physical delivery to a building.

If a form specifically asks for a PO Box, the older code may be the right one. If it asks for a delivery address, use the district code.

The Short Address: What Couriers Now Require

The Short Address (الرمز المختصر) is an eight-character code made of four letters and four numbers, for example RNMA7272. It identifies your exact building within the National Address system, and since January 2026 it is what courier companies need before they will accept a shipment for you.

How to find it:

• Tawakkalna: open the app, go to Services, select National Address
• Absher: log in and check your profile under National Address
• The green plate on your building exterior

Important for expats: many banks and government portals now ask for the postal code and the Short Address as separate fields. They are not interchangeable. If you do not have a registered National Address at all, register it through the SPL app before your next renewal, since it takes under ten minutes and blocks several things when missing.

There are four reliable ways to find your correct district postal code in Saudi Arabia:

Method 1: Check the Green Building Plate

Every registered building in Saudi Arabia has a metallic green or gray National Address plate on its exterior wall near the entrance. This plate displays your building number, street, district, and the full 9-digit postal code. This is the most accurate source.

Open the Tawakkalna app → tap “Services” → select “National Address.” Your full address including postal code and Short Address is displayed automatically based on your Iqama registration.

Log into Absher (absher.sa) → go to “My Profile” → “National Address.” Your registered postal code is shown here. If it shows an old address, update it immediately to avoid delivery and government issues.

Method 4: SPL Online Tool

Major Cities Postal Codes — Quick Reference Table

These are the primary postal codes for major Saudi cities. Use these for general correspondence. Always use district-level codes for courier deliveries in large cities.

Riyadh Postal Code: Full District List (Saudi Arabia ZIP Code Guide)

Riyadh is Saudi Arabia’s largest city with over 100 postal zones. The city code 12271 only covers the central business district (Al Olaya). If you are in any other neighbourhood, you must use your district’s specific code. Many expats in Riyadh make the mistake of using 12271 for everything — this causes delays with STC, Aramex, and Amazon.sa deliveries.

💡 Riyadh expat tip: If you live in the northern districts (Hittin, Al Narjis, Al Yasmin, Al Qirawan), note that these use codes starting with 13, not 12. Many online forms auto-reject 12271 for these areas.

Jeddah Postal Codes — District Wise

Jeddah is Saudi Arabia’s second largest city and the main entry point for expats arriving by sea or air. The main Jeddah postal code 22233 covers Al Balad (the historic district), but residential areas, industrial cities, and northern coastal zones all have their own codes.

💡 Jeddah expat tip: North Obhur and the newer coastal districts have seen the most postal code updates in 2025–2026. If you live in northern Jeddah, always verify your code via Tawakkalna before entering it into any government form.

Makkah Postal Codes — District Wise

Makkah postal codes are especially important during Hajj and Umrah seasons when millions of shipments, hotel bookings, and logistics deliveries converge on the city. The central code 24231 covers the Masjid al-Haram area, but every surrounding district — including Mina, Arafat, and Muzdalifah — has its own code.

Dammam Postal Codes — District Wise

Dammam is the capital of the Eastern Province and home to Saudi Arabia’s oil and petrochemical industries. The main code 34223 covers central government and commercial zones, while industrial cities require their own specific codes for logistics shipments.

Khobar Postal Codes — District Wise

Al Khobar is a modern commercial city adjacent to Dammam, popular with expats working in Aramco and the petrochemical sector. The main Khobar code is 34714 for the Al Jisr area. Coastal areas like Corniche, Half Moon Beach, and Aqrabiyah all use separate district codes.

Jubail Postal Codes — District Wise

Jubail is one of the world’s largest industrial cities. Expats working in petrochemical companies, refineries, or labor camps here often need very specific postal codes — the general city code 35713 will not reach most industrial addresses.

Yanbu Postal Codes — District Wise

Yanbu is a major refinery and industrial port city on the Red Sea coast. Expats working at Saudi Aramco Yanbu Refinery or LUBEREF need the exact industrial zone code — not the general city code.

Madinah Postal Codes — District Wise

Madinah is home to Masjid al-Nabawi and receives millions of visitors annually. The main postal code is 42311. If you are receiving deliveries near the Prophet’s Mosque area or in residential districts, use the district code.

Why National Address Registration Is Mandatory in 2026

Saudi Arabia’s National Address system (العنوان الوطني) is managed by Saudi Post and links your physical location to a unique, government-verified address. For expats it is tied to a range of everyday services, and going without it causes problems that are difficult to trace back to the cause.

When you register at address.gov.sa you receive:

• Building number, your specific building identifier
• Street name as officially registered with SPL
• District name in Arabic and English
• 5-digit postal code for your district

Common Postal Code Mistakes in Saudi Arabia

Based on real expat experience in Saudi Arabia, these are the most frequent errors that cause delivery failures and form rejections:

• Using the city code for all deliveries — 12271 does not cover all of Riyadh. Use your district code.
• Not knowing your Short Address. Since January 2026 couriers reject shipments without a National Address or Short Address. Your five-digit code alone is no longer enough for a delivery.
• Using old codes from Google Maps — Google Maps data is sometimes outdated. Always verify via Tawakkalna or SPL Online.
• Skipping National Address registration — Without registration, your address is not in the SPL system and deliveries cannot be processed.
