Why Saudi Arabia Uses the Umm al-Qura Calendar
Umm al-Qura is a calculated Hijri calendar maintained by the King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology. Because it is calculated in advance, government systems can print exact Hijri dates on documents years ahead. That is why your Iqama, visas and many contracts show a Hijri date that matches this page, while countries that wait for local moon sighting can be a day apart.
Many expats in Saudi Arabia only meet the Hijri calendar when a deadline appears on Absher. If you see a Hijri expiry date, convert it with the tool above, or follow our guide to checking your Iqama expiry date, which shows both calendars.
Hijri to Gregorian: The Key Differences
| Hijri (Umm al-Qura) | Gregorian | |
|---|---|---|
| Based on | The moon (12 lunar months) | The sun (solar year) |
| Days in a year | 354 or 355 | 365 or 366 |
| Days in a month | 29 or 30 | 28 to 31 |
| New day begins | At sunset, for religious purposes | At midnight |
| Used in Saudi Arabia for | Ramadan, Eid, Hajj and many dates on Absher and older documents | Government salaries, the state budget and most private contracts |
Because a Hijri year is about 11 days shorter, every Islamic date falls about 11 days earlier in the Gregorian calendar each year. That is why Ramadan moves through the seasons and comes roughly once in winter and once in summer over a 33-year cycle.
Converting an older date, such as a Hijri birth date: the converter above works for any date from 1318 AH to 1500 AH (1900 to 2077). For a quick estimate, multiply the Hijri year by 0.97 and add 622. For example, 1400 AH falls in 1979 to 1980.
Where expats in Saudi Arabia still meet Hijri dates:
- Absher and Muqeem: Iqama, visa and exit re-entry dates are often shown in Hijri first. Check your deadline with our guide to the Iqama expiry date.
- Public holidays: Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha follow the Hijri calendar, so the dates move every year. See the public holidays guide.
- Older contracts and documents: some leases, certificates and court papers written before 2016 use Hijri dates only.
A common mistake is entering a Hijri date in a field that expects a Gregorian one, for example 15/07/1447 instead of 15/07/2026. Check which calendar a form asks for before you submit it.
Why the Islamic Date Changes at Sunset
In Islamic tradition a new day begins at Maghrib (sunset), not at midnight. So on the evening before 1 Ramadan, people already greet each other for Ramadan. Official documents and the date shown on this page use the civil date, which changes at midnight Saudi time.
