How Overtime Pay Is Calculated
- Work out your basic hourly wage: monthly basic salary ÷ working days per month ÷ normal hours per day.
- Multiply it by 1.5 to get your overtime hourly rate.
- Multiply by your overtime hours to get your overtime pay.
Many employers divide the monthly salary by 30 days, the same convention used for end of service. Others use actual working days, such as 26. Set the working days in the calculator to match your contract or payslip.
| Example (SAR 4,000 basic, 30 days, 8 hours) | Amount |
|---|---|
| Basic hourly wage: 4,000 ÷ 30 ÷ 8 | SAR 16.67 |
| Overtime hourly rate: 16.67 × 1.5 | SAR 25.00 |
| Overtime pay for 20 hours | SAR 500.00 |
When Does Overtime Apply?
- Extra hours: anything beyond 8 hours a day or 48 hours a week.
- Weekly rest day: hours worked on your rest day, usually Friday, are overtime.
- Public holidays: all hours worked on Eid holidays and Saudi National Day count as overtime.
- Ramadan: for Muslim workers the normal day is 6 hours (36 hours a week), so hours beyond that are overtime.
Basic Salary or Total Salary?
This is the most common dispute we hear about. Most employers apply the 1.5 rate to your basic salary only, leaving out housing, transport and other allowances. Article 107 is worded as “the hourly wage plus 50% of the basic wage”, so if your contract defines your wage to include allowances, you may be owed more than the basic-only figure. Check your contract and your GOSI salary certificate, which shows the wage registered for you.
Overtime Limits and Your Rights
The Labor Law guideline caps overtime at 720 hours a year unless you agree to more. Overtime pay is your legal right: it cannot be replaced by time off unless you agree, and it should appear on your payslip. If your employer refuses to pay, ask HR in writing, keep copies of your timesheets, and if needed file a complaint with the Ministry of Human Resources. Frequently Asked Questions
How is overtime calculated in Saudi Arabia?
Divide your monthly basic salary by your working days and daily hours to get the basic hourly wage, multiply it by 1.5, then by your overtime hours. On a SAR 4,000 basic salary (30 days × 8 hours), 20 overtime hours pay SAR 500.
Is overtime based on basic salary or total salary?
Most employers calculate it on the basic salary, excluding housing and transport allowances, which gives 1.5 times the basic hourly wage. Article 107 is worded as the hourly wage plus 50% of the basic wage, so check how your contract defines your wage.
Is working on Friday or a public holiday overtime?
Yes. Hours worked on your weekly rest day or on public holidays such as Eid count as overtime and are paid at the same 1.5 rate.
How many overtime hours are allowed per year?
The Labor Law guideline is up to 720 overtime hours a year, unless the worker agrees to more.
What can I do if my employer does not pay overtime?
Ask HR in writing first and keep your timesheets. If it is still unpaid, you can file a labour complaint with the Ministry of Human Resources and Social Development (MHRSD).
